This the last book in French’s Cal Hooper series. Rachel Holohan, about to be engaged to the son of the local big man, is found drowned in the river. Her father wants Cal to look into it, which is the last thing Cal wants, and the village would rather everyone let it be. Meanwhile, large parcels of farmland around Ardnakelty, Ireland, are being quietly bought up by a developer with political connections, and nobody will say what’s going on. Almost the whole book happens in conversation, in which people say pleasant things and mean the opposite.
