Felix Scheinberger has drawn more than fifty children’s books, and he wrote this to get people over the fear of the blank page. His stance is that a sketchbook belongs to you and nobody else, so there’s no wrong way to fill it and no such thing as ruining one. Mistakes are just what the page looks like. The gist of his philosophy is permission. Don’t start on page one. Draw badly on purpose. Draw the thing in front of you instead of a photo of it. Most inspiring is his style: loose, bright, energetic, distorting. I’m not serious enough about drawing to fly to Germany and take one of his classes, but maybe someday.
