Rim to River

Still Reading

Zoellner walked eight hundred miles across Arizona, roughly the diagonal, and used the walk to grapple with the state he grew up in. Chapters alternate between the trail — heat, water, private land, dogs, the people who pick up a walking stranger — and essays on the things that made Arizona what it is: The Colorado River deal, the copper mines, the retirement industry, Barry Goldwater, the border, the water law, the Mormons, the sheriffs. He’s critical and affectionate at once.
